Hey all,
So freshers is nearly here and I've had a busy summer helping the JCR's to sort out their freshers fortnight plans.
I wish I was a freshers again this year is going to be amazing some of the events lined up by the JCR's for halls are going to be so much fun.
I'll be all over the place during freshers and my hair is now blue all over so I'll be easy to spot, come say hi if you see me.
A massive thanks to everyone that voted, your votes really made a difference it was so close.I couldn't have done it without all your support and I love every single one of you so much. Thank you for giving me this chance to make a difference.
Anyway I've already seen Dan and Alex today and chatted about getting the ball rolling. Dan has a provisional JCR constitution he's going to send to me to have a look over and I'm going to consult all the JCRs on it and see if anything should be changed . Then it's straight on with JCR elections the plan is to hold them 2 weeks after coming back from the easter break, and I want advertising to go up asap.
I'll be asking Sam to help me with all this as he cares just as much as I do and he's had some great ideas.
Seeing as i can't make it up to the concourse to wish everyone good luck for these final few days scrapbook will have to do.
I have a habit of getting ill at the most inconvenient moments usually Christmas eve, and I was amazed when I survived 16 straight days of freshers without getting ill. I'm going to spend the day reading and working on essay plans and an abstract for a potential dissertation question.
I will be there Wednesday night no matter what. I'm really looking forward to the results and the politician in me wants to know who's campaign worked, will it be the candidates going for experience ? the ones with the most presence on concourse ? is it the manifestos that get votes ? is it popularity and how many people you know ? or is it just random with some students picking candidates based only on their name ? Most importantly how has RON done ?
Anyway I'm going to go make a hot lemon and honey and curl up in bed, good luck to you all.
I finally got round to watching the meet the candidates and while watching the welfare and societies candidates. I noticed several mentioned JCRs have been just about club nights and not concentrated on welfare issues.
Well you're wrong Monte JCR has been very pro-active on welfare issues as our welfare officer will tell you. We've not just attended welfare committee but we've also helped promote SUSU campaigns like safe cycling and the drink spiking awareness I also personally got on the housing week promotion early telling every Monte fresher that would listen not to rush into getting a house and if they felt they had to get one early I sent them to SUAIC to get their contracts checked.
Emily talked to Claire from the gum clinic and got us loads of condoms to give out during our Monte bun fight and also ran a sexual awareness event as well as giving out chlamydia tests which we ran out of in an hour. It was also Emily who talked to Claire about sexual health cupboards for each halls of residences at £60 each, and its great to see Asha support that idea.
Monte has also been very pro the non-drinking events with live music and comedy nights having been a favioute but unfortunaltly due to the various problems with the running of the JCRs these did dye down in late November early December and due to not knowing who controls our accounts we haven't been able to run anything since Christmas.
I do agree and indeed insist that welfare could be much better promoted in halls and I would like to see every JCR, not just Monte, having a welfare officer, yes even the small halls as just because there's less people living there it doesn't make welfare any less important.
I'm personally proud of the fact I've made more people aware of Nightline and SUAIC especially those on my JCR committee. At all our halls reps meeting I have informed the residents, who are Monte's voice, about welfare issues from the latest committee and passed on several messages from Paul who is the university assistant chief security officer, and I'd like to think the Monte residents know their JCR care about their welfare.
Either way I hope whoever becomes our next VP Welfare and Societies officer ensures that in the future all JCRs have a welfare officer and residents get the concern they deserve.
So I seem to have got an extremely sore throat and my voice is suffering, there go the planned lecture shout outs then. Though I have my doubts on how effective they are after listening to many people complain about them and say they wouldn't vote for that candidate just because they did a lecture shout out.
Also I'm very pleased to be hearing how many people are reading manifestos and deciding who to vote for on those, I met two very nice girls on Kinki on Friday who came up to me and said I had their vote as they'd read my manifesto and my competitions and they thought mine was much better. There are still plenty of policies I didn't put in my manifesto and I've been talking to people about them, I won't write them all on scrapbook would take far too long and probably bore all of you to death, but if you want to ask me about anything I haven't included in my manifesto drop me a message.
Well if you still haven't voted get on it, I'll let my manifesto give you a reason to vote for me.
The first question I'll be asking everyone I see until Wednesday. Ideally I'd say the new sab and exec team can't be called legitimate unless we get over 50% of the student body to vote. However I am realistic and I know it's highly unlikely we'll see a turnout that big but please prove me wrong.
Get everyone you know to vote and like me make your first question "I've voted, have you ?"
